So, I’m in the throes of designing a new site and also needing to give feedback on another. Following my attendance at Web Fuelled for Business this week, it has certainly boosted my confidence to give the advice that I would normally have given, but now I can say categorically this is what Doug Richard thinks too!
Interestingly, I’ve found over the years the one thing that is surprisingly difficult to get people to change or buy into is colour usage. Regardless of what sites you demonstrate and how you explain what attracts the eyes, decisions on colour still seem to be subjective rather than scientific.
I’m paraphrasing Doug here, but he made it really simple to understand:
Whatever you want people to take action on (register; call you; buy etc), that needs to be in an obvious ‘foreground’ colour to catch the eye. The rest should be in a less obvious ‘background’ colour. Take a quick look at his bootcamp site and decide which are the take action/foreground highlights and what is left more understated in the background. Interesting, isn’t it?
Oh, and one last thing…don’t use a black background. Yuk.
Yesterday I met ex-Dragon Doug Richard and he gave me some straight forward, extremely useful feedback on a branding question I had. I jumped at the chance to ask him during a break at the Web Fuelled Business bootcamp at Sheffield’s Megacentre. He basically told me what I already knew, but to have it confirmed was music to my ears and ego.
The bootcamp was a superb event – and free! Doug and ex-Amazon executive James Dening conveyed an astonishing amount of information on all things web from SEO, SEM, SMM, E-commerce, Exporting, Adwords, Adsense, Remarketing and more!
Some of the bootcamp info reinforced my recent BTEC in Social Media for Business and some elements were completely new – how exciting: new stuff! Remarketing was especially relevant as I’ve just started an Adwords campaign. Remarketing basically drops cookies onto the computer of people who’ve previously visited your website and so when they next fire up a browser and visit a relevant site, your remarketing-targeted ad will, as if by magic, appear to them. This will keep happening until such times as you decide to switch it off. Well worth knowing about, don’t you think?
It’s about time I had my own site, so I’m starting here. As a Chartered Marketer and PR Professional for over ten years, I’ve witnessed the explosion that is the use of the internet as a publisher, community commentator and contact mechanism. With this in mind, I start my BTEC in Social Media for Business on Monday, so wish me luck and I’ll let you know how it goes.
